In today’s rapidly evolving professional landscape, networking events offer unique opportunities to build meaningful connections, learn from experts, and open doors to career advancement. However, making the most of these events requires strategy and intentionality—far more than simply exchanging business cards or LinkedIn profiles.

Drawing on my experience from attending networking events since the age of 16, I initially fell into the common trap of connecting without purpose. I found myself gathering contacts driven by FOMO, worried that I might miss out on an opportunity if I didn’t connect with everyone in sight. Yet, over time, I realised that without a deliberate approach, I’d made countless introductions but had retained little value or insight.

By rethinking my strategy, I transformed how I approached these events. Instead of focussing on numbers, I began focussing on quality—actively listening, taking notes, and most importantly, following up with gratitude and updates. This shift not only allowed me to forge more substantial, memorable connections but also made my presence at each event purposeful and impactful. Below, I’ll share tips and insights to help you maximise your own networking experience, ensuring that every event you attend becomes a meaningful step toward professional growth.

Understanding Networking Events

Networking events are gatherings designed to facilitate interaction and knowledge-sharing among professionals from various backgrounds. Whether a formal conference, a more casual seminar, or an industry-specific trade show, each type of event offers different networking dynamics, target audiences, and unique learning opportunities. These events serve as incubators for new ideas, partnerships, and professional relationships—foundational elements for anyone aiming to advance their career and stay connected within their field.

Why Attend Networking Events?

For corporate professionals, networking events are more than just social gatherings; they’re strategic tools for career and personal development. Here’s a breakdown of the significant benefits they offer:

  • Broaden Your Network: Networking events provide a platform to connect with professionals across industries, allowing for potential mentorship, collaboration, and strategic partnerships.

  • Access Direct Industry Insights: These events are a chance to learn directly from experts, stay up-to-date on trends, and understand best practices relevant to your field.

  • Unlock Career Opportunities: New projects, partnerships, and career advancements often begin with a simple introduction. A well-timed conversation can lead to collaborative opportunities or referrals.

  • Strengthen Your Professional Brand: Regularly attending and engaging in networking events helps to establish you as an active, connected professional, positioning you positively within your industry.

My Journey with Networking Events

I’ve attended numerous networking events, and in my early years, I thought success meant connecting with as many people as possible. But over time, I realised my approach was ineffective—I was left with names I barely remembered and conversations that didn’t translate into actionable insights. The turning point came when I began focussing on depth rather than breadth. By listening more attentively, asking thoughtful questions, and applying what I learned, I began experiencing real value from these connections. When a speaker’s advice made a positive impact on my career, I’d reach out to thank them, often sparking a longer-term connection. This habit helped me build relationships that felt genuine and constructive rather than fleeting.

Strategies for Standing Out at Networking Events

Building on my experiences, I’ve identified a few strategies to help you make the most of any networking event:

Present Yourself with Confidence and Approachability

First impressions are critical in networking environments. Confidence, when paired with a welcoming demeanour, not only makes you approachable but also shows that you value the opportunity to connect. Simple actions like maintaining good posture, making eye contact, and wearing a genuine smile can make a significant difference. Rather than waiting for others to approach you, introduce yourself confidently. Remember, everyone is there to network, so initiate conversations with a sense of openness and curiosity.

Listen Actively and Ask Insightful Questions

Effective networking isn’t about self-promotion; it’s about engaging with others and finding common ground. When attending an event, prioritise active listening over speaking. This approach not only demonstrates respect but also helps you retain valuable insights. Asking thoughtful questions based on what you hear can foster a deeper connection and highlight your genuine interest. Personally, I’ve found that listening with intent and following up with meaningful questions has helped me stand out. People appreciate someone who listens attentively—it’s a rare quality that leaves a lasting impression.

Take Notes to Retain and Apply Insights

The amount of information exchanged at networking events can be overwhelming. I found that taking notes, especially on key insights or topics I’d like to explore further, significantly improved my ability to retain information. Bringing a small notebook or using a digital device allows you to jot down points as they’re shared. Later, reviewing these notes and finding ways to apply the insights has proven invaluable. Once I began implementing advice from speakers, I noticed tangible improvements in my professional life. When reaching out to thank them, I could reference specific ways their advice had benefited me, solidifying our connection.

Following Up to Build Genuine Connections

The real power of networking often emerges after the event. Taking the time to follow up can transform a brief introduction into a meaningful, ongoing connection. A great example from my own experience was during the International Student Week—Work Integrated Learning session at Monash University in 2020. Brenda, our WIL coordinator and session facilitator, shared invaluable advice for students and graduates on navigating their final year and shaping their career paths. After the event, I reached out to thank her personally, referencing some of her insights that resonated with me. By showing genuine appreciation and a desire to apply her guidance, I initiated a relationship that has extended far beyond that initial session, and we continue to stay connected even now.

Tips for Effective Follow-Up

A personalised follow-up message is crucial. When connecting after an event, here are some key elements to consider:

  1. Start with a Reference to the Event: Mention the specific event and the topic of your conversation. For instance, “It was a pleasure meeting you at the [Event Name]. I really enjoyed discussing [topic you spoke about].”

  2. Express Genuine Interest in Their Work: Show that you value their expertise by referencing what resonated with you. “Your insights on [specific subject] have already sparked ideas I’m eager to explore further.”

  3. Offer Your Support or Follow Up with a Question: Creating a two-way exchange keeps the conversation open. For instance, “If there’s anything I can assist with, please feel free to reach out. Also, I’d love to stay updated on [related topic].”

  4. Thank Them for Their Time and Insights: A simple “thank you” can go a long way, particularly when it’s specific. It shows that you value their contribution and that their advice has made a tangible impact.

To sum up, trust me… networking events are more than an opportunity to grow their contact list—they’re an invaluable resource for personal development and industry insights. By entering each event with a clear purpose, presenting yourself with confidence, and listening actively, you can leave a strong impression that goes beyond a brief introduction. Most importantly, following up thoughtfully and with gratitude helps ensure that the connections you make become valuable long-term relationships.
