Here is How to Speak in Front of a Big Crowd

The Full Guide

On my trip back to Vietnam in February, I was invited as a speaker and had the opportunity to share my work and study experience in Australia with the younger generation at my old high school.

It was humbling and inspiring to see many students engaged with my presentation and found it helpful and somehow relevant to their personal stories. For me, it was one of the best experiences that I have ever had in my entire life. Not only did it provide a space for me to network, engage, and learn, but it also allowed me to foster my planning ability and, most importantly, my public speaking skills.

Speaking in front of a big crowd can be nerve-wracking, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right preparation and practice, you can deliver a confident and impactful speech. Here are some tips that I have utilised in my speech to confidently and professionally convey the message to 1,000 high school students.

Prepare, prepare and prepare

Firstly, it's important to prepare the speech in advance. This means identifying the purpose of your speech, the key value you want to deliver, and the main points you want to cover. Once you have a plan, you can start practicing. Practicing your speech multiple times will help you become more comfortable with the material and identify any areas that need improvement. Pssst … I self-practiced my presentation 50 times before the D-Day.

Understand who you talk to

Knowing your audience is also key to delivering a successful speech. Researching your audience ahead of time will help you tailor your speech to their interests and needs. This will help you connect with them and keep their attention. For example, my primary target audience would be students aged between 16 and 18. Therefore, choosing a positive and active tone of voice could help them feel open to my conversation.

Employ supportive resources

Using visual aids such as slides, videos, or props can also be an effective way to reinforce your message and keep your audience engaged. Take deep breaths, visualize a successful outcome, and remind yourself that you are prepared and capable.

Maintain the engagement

Engaging with your audience is also important. While speaking, it’s crucial to make eye contact and use other non-verbal communication methods. Lastly, be confident. Believe in yourself and your message. Speak with conviction and passion and project confidence through your body language.

Remember, the more you practice and prepare, the more comfortable and confident you will feel speaking in front of a big crowd.
