Things You Should Do
Preparing for a job interview can be a daunting task, but with the right approach, you can increase your chances of success. Since many people have asked me what my pre-interview preparation process looks like, I've decided to write this blog to showcase the steps.
Research the company
Before you go for the interview, make sure you research the company you are interviewing with. Look for information about their products, services, culture, and values. This will help you understand what they are looking for in a candidate and what you can bring to the table.
For example, Bowen's value is to help builders and trades build better at every stage of their project by providing an extensive range of building materials, hardware, and on-site hire products.
Review the job description
Make sure you understand the job requirements and responsibilities. This will help you prepare for questions about your skills and experience that are relevant to the position. Can't remember everything at once? Take the three most crucial requirements into consideration and try to build up on them.
For instance, Bowens looked for a candidate that can bring their creativity, data-driven, and caring capabilities to e-communicate with builders about the products and services they provide. An ideal applicant should also employ strategic thinking skills to create a solid Digital Marketing strategy to increase the connection between the brand and the customer through every touchpoint.
Practice answering common interview questions
There are certain questions that are almost always asked in job interviews. Practice answering these questions so that you are prepared when they come up. Examples of common questions include "What are your strengths and weaknesses?", "Why do you want to work for this company?", and "What are your long-term career goals?". Some helpful interview resources that are worth checking out include Seek Careers Blog, Indeed's Article, Harvard Business Review, and The Muse.
Dress appropriately
Dressing appropriately for the interview is important. Make sure you dress in professional attire that is appropriate for the industry and the company you are interviewing with.
Another tip from Ms. Jenny Huynh, a Lecturer at one of the top 5 universities in Vietnam, Ngoai Thuong University (i.e., Foreign Trade University), is to try to mix and match your clothes that have the same colour as your employer's brand logo when you have a job interview. This generates the invisible connection between you and the brand and help them psychologically visualise that you might be a good match for their company.
Arrive early
Arrive at least 10-15 minutes early for the interview. This will give you time to calm your nerves and prepare for the interview.
List out a few questions
At the end of the interview, the interviewer will usually ask if you have any questions. This is your opportunity to ask about the company, the job, and the hiring process. Asking questions shows that you are interested in the position and the company.
My top two questions that I would love to ask my interviewer are: "What does a day-to-day job as a [Marketing Coordinator] look like?" AND "What's your biggest learning about your position?"
Preparing for a job interview takes time and effort, but it is worth it in the end. By following these tips, you can increase your chances of success and make a good impression on your potential employer. Good luck!
